Dollar Spot Fungus

Dollar spot can affect all types of grass grown in South Carolina.  Dollar spot can be identified by dark, wilted grass blades in a circular pattern, usually the size of a silver dollar.

I think I have dollar spot!

Dollar spot is usually found in lawns with weak root systems

The discolored areas are usually found on the edge of the lawn along the roads, driveways or sidewalks. These conditions can be improved by core aeration in the spring along with proper mowing and watering practices.

Also, to combat this disease, you may choose to have a fungicide applied to your lawn. This application will help preserve the healthy grass while controlling Dollar Spot's spread. These treatments can usually control the Dollar Spot for 2-4 weeks.

Tips for managing Dollar Spot:

  •  Keep your lawn mowed on a regular basis, every 5 to 7 days.  Sharpen mower blades monthly.
  • Bag your clippings.
  • Utilize All Green's Core Aeration service.
  • Water your lawn in the mornings between 4am-6am.

Brown Patch Fungus

All types of grass in South Carolina can be affected by brown patch.  It is the most common and important-to-treat disease of tall fescue in the Southeast.  In most cases, affected areas are able to recover, but tall fescue lawns less than a year old can be completely killed by brown spot fungus.

I think I have brown spot!

Brown Patch causes thinned patches of light brown grass.

The patches are roughly circular in shape. These areas range in diameter from a few inches to several feet. Often the center of the patch will recover, resulting in a donut shaped pattern.

To keep this fungus under control, you may need to have a fungicide applied to your lawn. The treatment will both protect the healthy grass and control the spread of brown patch. These treatments, under favorable conditions, will control brown patch for 2-4 weeks.

A few tips to help manage the growth of brown patch:

  • Keep your lawn mowed on a regular basis, to the proper height for the grass species.  Lower than recommended lowing can increase disease severity.
  • Fescue should be mowed no shorter than 2.5 inches and no higher than 3.5 inches.
  • Bag all clippings
  • Water in the mornings. between 4am-6am
